How to Become a Specialist in Environmental Planning

An environmental planning specialist career focuses on impacts created by unnatural elements in the environment. There is no doubt that humans have created havoc with the ecological balance of our planet, and this has also affected the way our air, water bodies, animal habitats and natural resources exist. There is a need for recreating environmental balance and deal with such sensitive issues. There is a need for conserving the environment to create a healthy and safe environment for all living things.

There are many career opportunities available for environmental specialists. These specialists can work in areas of planning industrial hygiene, chemistry and biology, radiological health, environmental management, waste water, drinking water resources, protection of food, etc.

The job of an environmental planning specialist is to create successful and effective plans for conserving the environment. The management and regulation of fuel, air, water, and soil used by industries is done by the specialist. They also assess general health impacts of hazardous waste in the environment. The specialists can work with federal or private organizations.

They should be aware of environmental laws and formulate their policies in adherence with the same. Quantitative skills are essential for creating reports and suggest alternatives for hazardous working conditions. Management of environmental resources in cities, towns and reserves is done by environmental specialists. Their focus is to meet requirements of a given community but in adherence with the overall environmental regulations.

Planning specialists also to conduct research, create plans and develop programs for the successful implementation of environmental friendly norms. They often have to work in coordination with government agencies at federal and local levels. Conservation, effective management of natural resources and implementation of safe disposal methods are the main focus areas of an environmental planning specialist.

Environmental consulting is provided by these planners to ensure newer industries and commercial set ups conform to environmentally friendly norms.

To become an environmental planning specialist you must attend a college to earn a Bachelor's degree in environmental science or studies. People from a science or math background are preferred.

To be a planning specialist you should have a desire to conserve the environment and implement natural and safe solutions to such problems. Strong organizational skills with proficiency in quantitative analysis and designing can help you to be more successful. You should also have good communication skills to present your cause for the environment with ample proof.

As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be a predicted job growth this area. The average salary of the environmental planning specialist is approximately $45,000.

Some of the specialist areas that you can focus on include environmental engineering, regional planning, and urban development. Environmental sustainability has become the vital focus area with most governments hence there is a need for environmental planners who are able to ensure implementation of such strategies and improve living conditions for everyone. We deserve to live in a world that is safe and healthy. Living free from environmental waste is a step toward many improvements.
