The technical research plays a vital role in the transformation of the environment and the recognition of its diversity. Environmental engineering jobs are in great demand since they combat environmental damage by technical research and also by developing solutions to problems like pollution, ozone depletion, and protection of wildlife. Government policies, laws, and regulations are directed towards the protection of the environment, and so arises the need for environmental research and professionals, including researchers and engineers. Environment science jobs bring together researchers from a wide variety of disciplines and backgrounds to develop and deliver holistic, cutting–edge research and also the understanding required to quantify the impacts of human habitation on the planet.

According to the analysts, internationally a growing demand for technical expertise in environment has been identified. In recent years, there has been a prominent expansion in the range of environmental career jobs available: from environmental engineering for environment protection and bio-physical areas, to local government operations like, environmental auditing, assessment, and management etc. To have a clear picture on the environmental job opportunities in Australia, a survey was conducted with 600 respondents working in environment jobs over there. The survey results identified a wide range of professional areas; these are grouped into 12 subcategories under three main environmental employment sectors: environmental protection (19% of respondents), conservation and preservation of natural resources (26%), environmental sustainability (55%). Most of the respondents mainly had bachelor-level degrees; however, a substantial proportion had honours degrees or postgraduate qualifications. Most of the respondents strongly recommended undertaking research and work experience to acquire key general skills that they identified as important for working in the environment sector. Comparison with the situations in the UK, Canada, and the USA are also offered regarding the results and trends, and suggestions for further research in environment.

Environmental technologies range from soil remediation techniques, to recycling systems for waste water in industrial processes, to energy efficient car engine techniques. They are basically any technology that, when compared to other similar technologies, does the same thing -- but with less environmental impact. Many of these technologies have great potential to improve the environment, and, at the same time, contribute to economic growth and employment. With environmental concerns having grown visibly in recent years, this is the time to pursue actions for a sustainable and environmentally friendly world. This requires extensive environmental technical research and development as we attempt to contribute to tackling these major 21st century challenges. Environment is a field where collaborative technical research has proven to be highly fruitful. Furthermore, the challenges posed by the increasing natural and man-made pressures on the environment and its resources require a coordinated approach at international levels.

Environmental technologies are those tools and applications that can decrease material inputs, reduce energy consumption and emissions, recover valuable by-products, and minimise waste. In general they are lean and resource-efficient technologies that can help to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Environmental technologies are about greening the environment. There are several major types of environmental research related to environmental protection efforts such as, air pollution control, industrial hygiene, radiation protection, hazardous waste management, toxic materials control, storm water management, solid waste disposal, public health, and land management. Environmental technical research managers use scientific research methods in research and schedule and assign duties to staff research scientists and engineers based on evaluation of their knowledge and area of specialization. The technical research manager plans, coordinates, and directs the activities of the staff involved in developing procedures, equipment, and techniques to solve the problems having impact on the environment. He/she confers with technical research engineers and project scientists to formulate research plans. The technical research manager is required to prepare the environmental research project feasibility and progress reports. The technical manager also coordinates activities of research personnel whereby the problems are analysed, solutions are proposed, and testing are carried out. His/her responsibility also includes reviewing the technical aspects of project, assisting staff, and assessing productivity of lines of research. The environmental research manger should have at least a post graduation or PhD in environmental science. Having few years of experience in environmental protection agencies or NGOs is an added advantage.

In environmental field, continuous education is expected in order to keep abreast of the changes in technologies. In this field the environmental engineers can also expect to earn good salary. According to the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, Bachelor of Science engineers can demand a starting salary between $ 36000- $ 42000. Upon gaining 4- 5 years of experience one can expect to jump into the range of $ 50,000- $60,000.

Based on a recent survey, there are hundreds of environmental consulting firms currently operating in United States and Canada. Some consist of handful of employees while others employ dozens of engineers, geologists, hydrologists, planners, technicians, environmental researchers, scientists, support staffs etc. Some companies have a different approach to environmental research and consulting; they may be dealing with, the development of risk management plans, compliance with air and water pollution regulations, pollution prevention etc. Some firms specialize in the mitigation of air or water quality problems, while others conduct research and offer services that involve planning risk management. Environmental technical staffing agencies also work to match temporary employment opportunities with environmental scientists.

Environmental technical research employees can work for variety of employers like government, large companies in private sector, and also non-profit organizations. According to the analysts, there have been more jobs than workers in this environmental technical research field.
