Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Ames Laboratory is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support the Environmental Programs within the Environment, Safety and Health department. This position will be filled ad an entry level position, Environmental Specialist I. Ames Laboratory is a US Department of Energy (DOE) funded national laboratory operated through contractual agreement with Iowa State University.
Under general supervision the incumbent will perform routine professional tasks in support of various environmental programs at Ames Laboratory. Programs include federally mandated Clean Air Act (CAA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and various related programs. This position will support the Radiological Protection Program by conducting routine surveys using portable detection equipment and established procedures. The candidate will support initiatives, goals, and objectives of the Environment, Safety, Health and Assurance Department.
This position involves multiple tasks with the ability to prioritize various temporally interrelated tasks and complete them as efficiently as possible. The incumbent must possess the ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse set of individuals at all levels of the organization. The ability to learn new skills as technology and regulation requirements advance is important to success in this position.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and related experience.
Supplemental Required Education and Experience
Degree must be in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Biology/Molecular/Microbiology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Plant Pathology, Occupational Safety/Health, Health Physics, or related field.
Preferred Education and Experience
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, general safety, biosafety, radiation safety, regulatory compliance or other related field.
• Technical training/experience covering OSHA, EPA, NFPA or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards.
• Computer experience to include work with spreadsheets and relational databases.
