Duties and


This position will assist in ongoing terrestrial and aquatic research activities. Duties will fall into three categories:

1) Field work (70%) Vegetation sampling for projects involving oak savanna restoration within and outside the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, long-term monitoring of the federally threatened Pitcher’s thistle (Cirsium pitcheri) and studies of invasive weevils, and soil/microbial sampling of savanna soils and invasive plant root zones. Successful applicants will also collect and process data from remote microclimate sensing devices (soil moisture and temperature) in savannas and open dunes. Additional work may involve habitat studies for conservation of reptiles, butterflies and birds.

2) Laboratory work (15%) Laboratory work will involve processing soil samples for analysis and possible DNA extraction from soil samples

3) Office work (15%) Data entry and quality control, processing vegetation information with specialized software, and guided data analyses for use in scientific presentations, reports, and peer-review articles.


The ideal candidate for this position will have a background in plant ecology, terrestrial and aquatic plant identification, vegetation sampling and animal ecology. The incumbent must be able to work well in a team environment, have experience and interest in sampling and recording vegetation composition, and be familiar with data entry and summarization using Excel, PCORD, Systat and the R statistical environment. Some programming experience would be a benefit. Candidates must be physically able to work on a coastal dune environment including working in often hot humid conditions and in tick, mosquito, and chigger infested areas. Candidates must have completed at least two or more years of an undergraduate degree or a Bachelor (BS) degree in science in the past 12 months. Students are required to document educational status by submitting a copy of their transcript.
