As part of the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health, this full-time Rabies Specialist (Environmental Health Specialist II) position's primary function is to investigate and educate on potential rabies exposures in Fairfax District. Provides rabies disease control services to diverse populations. Activities will include community and partner outreach, animal bite report investigation, confirming potentially exposed animal clearance, and public education for rabies disease control and prevention.

Employment Standards


Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental health or a bachelor's degree with at least 30 semester hours of course work in the physical or biological sciences; plus, one year of experience in environmental health investigations.


The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.


Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.


Knowledge of public health principles and practices of rabies disease control and prevention. Ability to work independently and communicate effectively using written, verbal, and electronic methods. Must be results driven, detail oriented, and demonstrate effective and customer oriented communication skills. Experience using computers to rapidly enter data and track events/incidents through resolution. Experience in documentation standards and ability to fully document interactions with clients and other agencies. Ability to think quickly and apply public health knowledge to complex situations to be able to provide clients with appropriate public health recommendations and education.


Ability to walk, negotiate/traverse sites with unleveled terrain and/or narrow passages; crouch, kneel, bend, reach, stretch, climb ladders, use test equipment, lift and carry instruments and other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, wear personal protective equipment, and have visual acuity to operate a personal computer. Uses hands to grasp, handle and feel. Ability to conduct inspections/investigations outdoors in extreme temperature environments. Ability to operate motor vehicle in adverse weather conditions. All duties perform with or without reasonable accommodations.
