Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The 900 positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

The primary responsibility of the organizational unit is providing cleaning, sanitizing, and pest control services to over 10 million square feet of campus space. This service is provided through the utilization of over 320 staff members.

Essential Job Duties

This position’s overall function is to manage six housing housekeeping zones consisting of Zone Managers, University Housekeepers and a Maintenance Mechanic. Each housekeeping zone is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing assigned buildings internal and external spaces. The Deputy Assistant Director (


) is ultimately responsible for the appearance of the buildings in the zone, equipment upkeep and customer satisfaction. Duties will include assisting the Director with strategic and tactical planning, and implementing and administering the housekeeping program of a large-scale organization. The managerial functions will include organizing/directing, projecting and managing departmental budgets. They manage all available resources, approving material requests and other expenditures, in addition to establishing and presenting formal budgets to senior management. This position is responsible for customer relations and Quality Assurance. This requires them to be proactive and anticipate customer needs and modify processes as needed to improve customer relations. Maintaining a training development program for staff is essential to address general training needs, emergency response effectiveness and timeliness, inclement weather duties and expectations, and overall work standards. They also manage personnel as a primary job duty. This will include interpreting and implementing departmental policy, recruitment and hiring approvals, counseling, mediation, rendering decisions involving disciplinary matters, performance management and position management. They may serve on University committees as the University Housekeeping representative.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Perform on-call administrator duties.

Attend meetings and conferences.

This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a Director.

Minimum Experience/Education

High School Diploma or equivalency and four years of experience in the area of assignment, of which two years are supervisory; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require Certification or Eligibility For Certification.

Departmental Required Skills

Requires the skills to operate a computer to complete reports, develop presentations, and to calculate financial data. Requires skills to communicate effectively in writing as well as verbally. Requires the ability to negotiate with vendors.

Management/supervisory experience.

Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Prefer Bachelors degree in management, accounting or similar area of study. Prefer completion of International Executive housekeeping Association Certification, and at least 6 years of management experience, preferably in a housekeeping environment.

Required License or Certification

Valid DL required.

Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
