Summary:
Responsible for the treatment of wastewater for the City of Alpena which uses a 5.5MGD activated sludge treatment.  Operates and maintain WWTP and associated equipment.  Conducts lab analysis utilizes test results to make changes to the treatment process as required.   Ensures proper dosage of treatment chemicals using pumps and metering devises.   Operate pumps and valves as necessary.  Performs numerous water quality testing procedures, including microbiological, amperometric chlorine residual testing, BOD, suspended solids, phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen. Participates in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of process control and treatment equipment as needed in collaboration with plant maintenance.  Record accurate results and information on daily/monthly operational logs as well as multiple laboratory records.
Typically works 40 hours per week.   Some weekends each month. 
On-call to respond to System Alarms and available to assist with maintenance issues after hours.  
Overtime is anticipated and expected with this position.  
Report to and work directly with Plant Manager with minimal supervision.   Maintain the City of Alpena Wastewater Treatment Plant and associated systems including electrical, mechanical, plumbing (industrial to household sizes), HVAC and general tasks.  Ensure all aspects of the treatment system are in proper working condition.   Conduct routine inspections and checks on all systems utilized at the WWTP.   Complete necessary service on equipment in timely manner.   Assist contractors on large scale capital projects.   Identify areas of concern, discuss with Plant Manager and rectify by ordering replacement parts and installing.  Maintain WWTP grounds and lawn during all seasons.   Maintain record keeping of maintenance tasks on appropriate logbooks.

Work with minimal to moderate supervision while completing tasks.  
Position is responsible for the overall treatment activities of facility while conducting tasks safely according to internal policies and procedures.

Nature & Scope-Principal Areas of Responsibilities:
Diagnose WWTP operational problems and take corrective action; communicate status, changes and abnormalities in operating areas. 
Follow process control procedures, verify and report suspected malfunctions and variance to supervisors. 
Inspect and troubleshoot equipment using tools and gauges of the trade; obtain necessary parts through established procedures. 
Maintain adequate laboratory supply inventory as well as maintain and evaluate daily lab records and procedures including QA/QC.  
Monitor and observe operating conditions, record observations and data on multiple logs.
Perform chemical and biological analyses using lab equipment: benchtop units, titrations, etc. 
Operate equipment manually and through instrument panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units in an assigned area.
Operate, monitor, inspect and maintain equipment and processes at the WTP in a safe and efficient manner while satisfying the requirements of customers, clients, and regulatory agencies.
Responsible for the proper use and care of hand tools and knowledge and use of the company’s safety policies and procedures.
Performs preventive maintenance, housekeeping tasks, and inspections as assigned.
Collects samples for process control and compliance monitoring in accordance with standard procedures. Performs process control sample analyses in accordance with standard laboratory procedures.
Complies with company safety programs 
Monitor processes/equipment to ensure efficient operations.
Record data including flow meters, tank levels, pump speeds, chemical residuals etc. 
Perform inspection rounds of facilities; recognize, resolve, and report problems that could jeopardize employee safety or equipment operations
Perform necessary housekeeping functions to and around plant equipment, buildings and grounds, including snow shoveling, sweeping, painting, operating mowers and other powered lawn equipment.
Maintains appearance and cleanliness of all facilities under the responsibility of Veolia.
Perform preventive maintenance tasks as assigned, including exercising valves, lubrication, filter checks, inspection of safety-related items such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations and spill prevention equipment. 
Involved in SOP development
Train peers and subordinates as requested. 
Perform other duties as assigned/needed. 
Qualifications
Education/Equivalent:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Associates or bachelor’s degree in science, environmental science, biology or similar field preferred.  
Valid Michigan D Wastewater Treatment Operator’s Certification preferred, however ability to test for D when approved may be acceptable.   Must be approved to test and pass within 6 months. 
Valid Driver’s License in State of Residency with the ability to meet Risk Management guidelines.
Work Experience Needed:
1-2 years’ experience in water and/or wastewater systems is preferred - experience in public works field work, water distribution, sanitary collection systems, and/or storm water system pipeline maintenance operations, or varied maintenance or construction work in sanitary, storm, or water utilities; demonstrated proficient equipment operations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Professional certifications in water or wastewater operations preferred.  
Past mechanical and/or maintenance experience desired.    
Special Skills/Abilities Needed:
Exceptional attention to detail and standard operating procedures.  
Technical expertise in water/wastewater operations, sampling, and laboratory practices.
Professional judgment / decision-making skills.
Ability to perform general math calculations.
Mechanical ability.
Ability to use standard office equipment such as personal computers and calculators.
Familiarity with MS Office including word processing and spreadsheets.
Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to work well with others and alone.
Troubleshooting and ability to identify areas of concern and make decisions to correct the situation while notifying managers of the problem.  
Customer service and communication skills.
