Profile

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Engineer II

Our Electromagnetic Environmental Effects team works to ensure our avionics hardware will perform when integrated into a complex and delicate system of both sensitive and high-power avionics that must operate through some of the harshest electromagnetic environments imaginable. The team performs exhaustive avionics analysis, design, and test at the board, unit, subsystem, and system levels with work that reaches out to almost all of the departments at SpaceX.  As such, they work closely with a significant number of teams within the company, most amounting to: the hardware design teams, production teams, structures teams, propulsion teams, launch, and mission management teams.  They are one of the few teams that interface with almost all aspects of the company as well as getting significant hands on time with flight hardware. They play a crucial role in the development of our systems particularly as we advance our efforts towards satellites and creating safe, reliable, inexpensive, and innovative systems that push the boundaries in size and mass.

Responsibilities:

Design rockets, spacecraft, and satellites for electromagnetic compatibility

Set requirements and ensure that designs meet EMI/EMC requirements

Interface with, coach, and set requirements with various design teams all around the company

Perform electromagnetic interference design and troubleshooting analysis

Perform analysis and design relating to: circuit grounding architectures, circuit transient protection, structural bonding, circuit isolation, transfer impedance, shielding effectiveness, effects of radiated/conducted emissions & susceptibility, near field/far field electric fields, welding, corona, computational electromagnetics, effects of space plasma, lightning, surface/bulk/triboelectric charging, etc.

Design and perform tests to validate the analyses and designs from the previous bullet

Write documents and control plans as needed

Troubleshoot EMI events from system to board level

Operate a variety of EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment

Independently perform verifications and document results in a clear, precise, and complete manner

Support Engineering Management with confidence; think creatively -- question the status quo, while following documentation and maintaining prescribed quality standards.

Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or other technical areas of study

Knowledge of EMI/EMC requirements and testing.  This includes: grounding, bonding, shielding, design for low radiated emissions, lightning, electromagnetic field coupling, Ohm's law, Maxwell's equations, boundary conditions, image charge/current, lumped element modeling, effects of space plasma, welding, corona, charging, and arc discharge

Knowledge of materials and their electrical properties including paint, anodize, magnaplate, nickel plate, alodine, surface finish, electrical conductivity, volume resistivity, surface resistance

Experience with both conducted and radiated EMI/EMC analysis

Experience with reading, interpreting and following: Circuit schematics, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, BOMs, cable harnesses, wiring schematics, interface diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical drawings and CAD software

Demonstrated experience troubleshooting EMI events from system to board level

Demonstrated experience with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, DO-160, SSP 30237, SSP 30238, NASA-HDBK-4001, NASA-STD-4003 documentation

Strong knowledge of plasma/space physics, dielectric breakdown, RF principals, RF engineering

Experience preferred in fast-paced work environment with flight hardware

Able to adapt to constantly changing work assignments

Excellent concentration and attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy

Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with Engineering and Production
